A 45-minute Sunday school Christmas lesson with coloring pages (ages 5-8)

Open with a prayer (5 minutes), read Luke 2:1-20 aloud (10), color the shepherds or the star while you talk (15), practice Luke 2:14 as a memory verse (5), ask three questions (5), and close with a carol and prayer (5).

This lesson needs a Bible, crayons, and one printed coloring page per child. It works for a class of 4 or 24.

Before class

Print one coloring page per child (our free page of a lamb under the star fits this lesson). Write Luke 2:14 on the board.

1. Welcome and prayer (5 minutes)

Greet each child by name. Pray: "Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus. Help us listen and learn today. Amen."

2. Read the story (10 minutes)

Read Luke 2:1-20 aloud, or retell it from our Christmas story for kids. Pause at "Don't be afraid" and let the children say it with you.

3. Color and talk (15 minutes)

Hand out the pages. While they color, ask:

4. Memory verse (5 minutes)

Luke 2:14: "Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men." Say it together three times, softer each time, then loud on the last one.

5. Wrap-up questions (5 minutes)

6. Song and closing prayer (5 minutes)

Sing one verse of "Silent Night" or "Away in a Manger". Close: "Thank you, God, for the gift of Jesus. Amen." Send the colored pages home so families can talk about the story at supper.

Tips for mixed ages

Give older children (9 and up) a second job: read the verses aloud, or write the memory verse at the bottom of their page. Younger ones can color while listening.
